PETITION TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR ON THE HIGH-HANDEDNESS OF AWO HALL PORTERS/WARDEN

PETITION TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR ON THE HIGH-HANDEDNESS OF AWO HALL PORTERS/WARDEN

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

Dear Sir,

With due regards to your esteemed office, we write this to bring to your notice the bitter, unpalatable and ugly experiences faced by students who reside in Awo Hall and how the Porters have turned themselves into Demi-gods.

What should have been described as a peaceful abode of intellectual minds (or castle of great men as our motto depicts) is gradually turning into a banana republic with the constant efforts of Porters to keep harassing, exploiting and oppressing students on baseless reasons.

On different occasions, the porters in-charge of Awo hall have preyed on our meekness to humiliate us and make living so unbearable for us.

About two weeks ago, some of the porters falsely alleged a student of selling food items in the hostel because of the bulk of food stuff he bought in the market.

After several hours of disallowing him from going into his room, they eventually threatened him to settle them or risk losing his bed space, in which he was later freed after giving them a portion of the food stuffs he purchased.

Another horrible situation that is now becoming intolerable is how porters now treat us like slaves without any dignity of living. Such can be seen in the manner they intrude our privacy under the pretence of inspection.

At times, they visit our rooms early in the morning and search our personal luggages. They even cart away some of our belongings at times on baseless grounds. As at the exact time of writing this, some of our colleagues have been unable to go on with their regular classes like before because some of their clothes and footwears have been seized for no justified reason. It even becomes tougher for some of us who don't have much finance to get enough wears.

More saddening is that most us fail to recover all our seized clothes upon release, as some must have been misplaced or claimed by someone else while the others becomes condemned due to strong offensive odour of staleness that must have developed because they were packed with damp clothes or ones that were still dripping at the moment of seizure.

While we clamour for the provision of adequate laundry facilities such as drying lines and more, we maintain that no rule regulates the laundry of clothes in halls, and as such the seizure of our clothes that are spread on the railings by porters remains an illegal act.

Apart from the obvious damages caused to students through the enforcement of baseless rules, the porters, as well, vandalise school properties in the course of their actions. A notable mention for that is the forceful closure of student rooms with nails and hammers, which in most cases disfigures and further weakens the already weakened wooden doors.

It is important to state that what has been written is a just a fragment representation of our numerous experiences with the porters/warden which ranges from the illegal seizure of our belongings to release of such belongings for financial inducements among many other sharp practices.

In respect of the foregoing, we call on you to take necessary actions with promptness and call the porters to order and if they case maybe that they should be replaced because we now dread to have  comfort in our rooms, as we are no longer treated with any iota of respect, but with spite and contempt.

Thanks for your cooperation
